JaMia Vernette Hill

I am from “stay in a child’s place” and “who you talkin to”

I am from soul music and soul food

I am from a place where sisters are also mothers

And where sisters don’t speak to each other because of decade old disputes

I am from a place where Santa manages to come every year, despite how difficult it is

I am from a family of perfect with imperfect pasts

A family almost as dysfunctional as the Gallaghers and more emotionally abusive than Joe Jackson

I am from a family that would kill for their relatives because no one hurts us besides us

I am from a family that loves unconditionally, despite appearances

I am from muddied waters of ancestry that make “what are you” a confusing question to answer

I am from a marriage-less union with an age gap spanning two decades

I am from chaos, happiness, arguments, and laughter.

But most importantly, I am from love.

THIS IS SO NICE! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to make an I Am From poem and the one I have now can’t even compare to this!

I love the parallel structure lol! This was really great and I related to this; Baker would be proud. 🙂
